#23 The End Yay!!

This was a definitely a learning experience for me. There is so much going on out there in cyberspace that could blow your mind if you tried to keep up. This whole Learning 2.0 thing was just great for me as it took me to places I would not have known about otherwise.
A couple of my favoutied sites would have to be flickr and youtube as there are heaps of weird and wonderful things to see. Then there was the challenge of putting the Rollyo search icon onto the Blog page, note I didn't succeed with the youtube move... One last go at downloading some old phots that don't have a home..whoops! did the same one twice...typical

#22 Audio books

have had a play with the ebooks site: http://worldebookfair.com/Mp3eBooks.htm Had a look at a couple of titles but found it confusing when I went to listen to the book I wasn't sure how to download them, although I will persevere

#21 Podcasts, smodcasts!

What a place to get side tracked! After begining a search for book reviews I then found myself in another place altogether. The 3 search areas such as podcastalley.com were very US based in their content, so some of the poems and books I searched for had no finds. I did find an area that allows you to hear tracks from an album although it cost 6.99 us dollars to hear the whole album. No doubt there could be uses in the library setting, such as what we are learing at the moment where each new subject has a podcast to listen to which explains the area we are looking at. (make sense??)

#19 Discovering Web2.0 Tools

I was very impressed with the amount of "tools" available to use, one which I really thought a very good idea was http://www.lulu.com which allows "online authors" to publish there works in an online format. Another useful tool was http://www.biblio.com which we use quite a bit in the library, as a search tool when trying to find that elusive item. Therer were so many choices I only skimmed the surface in my exploration of there 'tools'

#15 Library 2.0,and Web 2.0

ARGH!!!! I read thru as much of the info on Libraries and their perspectives on 2.0 etc.as I could manage. Again I found the Youtube video the most informative as I am a visual person (does that make sense??) I know we have to keep up with the times as we are trying to do with our Learning 2.0 excercises, but we still have the little old ladies who only want a sweet story to take to bed with them after all...

#18 Online applications and tools

have just had a quick play with Zoho Writer and sent the bit of writing to my Blog, I can see the merit in such applications and tools as this in creating web sites etc.

Untitled

this is being written in Zoho writer and I hope to transfer it to my blog. I am viewing a screen with so many tools at the top it would take ages to find out what each of them do.
surprised This will be me if it works!

#17 Playing around with PBWiki

Who on earth invents the names for all these weird things on the Internet?? Anyway I have had a 'play' with the PBWiki thing and added my favourite websites and pastimes, it was rather easy really, although I didn't have any favourite web sites, but I found a couple to add anyway.

#16 Wikis

Wow! This was a great eye opener to me, the practical use of Wikis is amazing. What I found the most informative was the Youtube demonstration of what a Wiki is, it made absolute sense to a techno-boob such as I.
A Wiki is just the thing in a Library situation where Book Reviews, Local and Family History, School project material and numerous other things could be collated by either the Library staff or our users. I took a look at some of the examples, all American of course but nontheless interesting and informative. Although I have been aware of Wikipedia for ages I really didn't know Wikis were an interactive thing where folk could add there little bit of info.

#13. tagging and all that stuff

Well we are really getting into the hard stuff here! I have had a browse through 'tagging' and 'del.ici.ous' or whatever it is and find it all wild and wonderful. I can see the benefit of using these resources to keep favourite sites within easy reach although having the time to peruse them all would be great.

Week 5 #11. Library thing

had a look at Library thing and selected a few of my favourite books, which I reviewed and rated. Found it a bit daunting http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php I found it didn't recognise some of the Australian books I tried to find, which was rather frustrating.....

#4 relatively simple syndication

http://www.bloglines.com/myblogs this is the site I went into to set up my account, I don't know who thought of the acronym RSS but the simple bit is a bit of a misnomer! I have found some favourite subjects and will check out some of the Libary related sites to save

#RSS

I have set up my RSS account but have not yet had time to play around with what it actually does.

#3 Technology

My first introduction to computers was when I went back to High School in 1995 at the ripe old age of 39, to do my VCE. I was one of those at the tail end of The Baby Boomer years who left school at 15 and sailed straight into a job. When my children were all at school I felt it was time to finish my schooling so I jumped in before I thought too much about it. Not only did I go back to school in our small town I also joined the ranks of the 17 to 18 year olds who hung around the Common Room! One thing I didn't think through was my great lack of computer knowledge, in fact I had never touched one in my life! All of a sudden here I was expected to do all my work on this machine that I didn't even know how to turn on. My saving grace was the wonderful help and support of my fellow students who thought me a great lark and were all too ready to lead me through the process as though I was a 2 year old. A great advantage that I had was the skill of touch typing that all girls learnt in the 60's/'70's when I was at school, for some reason this is no longer taught, so my slowness at how to use the computer was made up the speed at which I put the info. into it. I messed up and lost my work a few times but soon got the hang of the new technology. Now I work in a library and techonology changes are part of everyday, I am just so glad I was thrown in at the deep end or I may never have ventured in to the wonderful world of computers.

a good one for mythbusters

My husband is like a cat but instead of 9 lives I think he must have used up about 20! Yesterday while using his electric cross-cut saw to make a new cupboard for our kitchen sink, he cut straight through the power cord! He thought he had hit a nail as there was a grinding sound and a puff of black smoke, he didn't even realise he's done it until he went to cut the next piece of wood and found the saw wouldn't go, low and behold there was the cord cut clean through! Amazingly he didn't even get any sort of shock.
Ther you go another one for the Mythbusters

Recently I started researching my family tree and found a great deal of information through the Internet genealogy message boards.

My father's family came from Liverpool UK, and prior to that the island of Unst in the Shetlands. I have managed to trace back to Mirable Russland who married James Winwick, they had 6 children one of whom was Barbara Jane Winwick b. 1797 in Unst. Barbara married John Thomason in 1826, they 5 children one of whom was my g.g.grandfather Magnus Winwick Thomason, it was he who ended up in Liverpool where he married Jane Sillitoe in 1863. My great gradfaterh George james Thomson was one of their children, her married Emma Smith, and one of their children, Ernest Thomson was my grandfather. I find it fascinating that my father came to Australia and it wasn't until I began to take an interest in his family history that he became aware of the connection to the Shetland Isles. We are more aware these days of our past and have the means to contact others with the same interests through the Internet.

a wild and windy afternoon

For a Spring day it is very cold and windy with the look of rain but alas it hasn't eventuated. The farmers are becoming frustrated at the sight of dark clouds without the resultant downpour.
I can see a once green lawn browning off as I write this, so much for the rains we were supposed to get.
What a cheerful way to begin my blog! Everyone puts on happy face in the country and it's great living in a place where you know most everyone and they know you, they call it "Community Living",. When you waldk down the street you say "Hi, how are you today?" and the other person says the same, it you both have time you stop for a chat and it takes ages to get your groceries sometimes, but I wouldn't swap living in a small town for anything!
